The training project entitled “Healthy Animal, Healthy Environment, Healthy Person” which aims to reach out to the male and female farmers who engage in agriculture and livestock in the districts and villages has been initiated with the cooperation of Ondokuz Mayıs University Women and Society Application and Research Center (OKTAM) and 19 Mayıs Municipality.
30 farmers who are living in Çandır Village, Mayor of 19 Mayıs Osman Topaloğlu, District Director of Agriculture Galip Baykal, and staff members have joined the first training session held in the meeting hall of the 19 Mayıs District Governorate.
The training project aims to increase the awareness of the farmers on environment, animal and public health, increase the knowledge level of the farmers on how to produce more economic and healthier products, aims to draw attention to the harms of pesticides to human health when used unconsciously, and aims to tell the farmers their roles in containing infectious diseases.
OKTAM Director Prof. Dr. Hatice Kumcağız indicated that the project will continue for a year and they plan to reach the farmers and breeders who live in the villages of 19 Mayıs Municipality with the academic members of OMU Faculty of Veterinary Medicine; and said the following: “The goal of our center is to engage in activities to support women in their quest to become more knowledgeable and sensitive in every aspect regarding their families so that they can take their places in social and economic development, and to hold activities towards this end. In this regard, we think that our training project is important and beneficial for our farmers who live in the rural regions.”
The following members of the Faculty of Veterinary Science gave the following training courses in the training which was coordinated by OKTAM Deputy Director and Faculty of Veterinary Science Member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dilek Güvenç: Prof. Dr. Tolga Güvenç on “Zoonotic Diseases”; Prof. Dr. Filiz Akdağ on “Animal Housing and Animal Hygiene in Dairy Cattle Breeding”; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dilek Güvenç on “Effects of Pesticides on Human Health”; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Berrin Şentürk on “Livestock Value Chain and The Role of the Breeder in the Fight against Contagious Animal Diseases”.
