A solo painting exhibition by Hasret Yavuz, supported by Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) Scientific Research Projects Coordination Unit (BAPKOB), has opened at OMU Faculty of Fine Arts as part of the "Meeting of Traditional Hemp Weaving with Painting Art" project.

Hasret Yavuz, who teaches art courses at OMU Ladik Vocational School, presented her works that merge traditional motifs woven into kilims on hemp looms with painting art. The exhibition, featuring 21 original pieces by Yavuz, will remain open to visitors at the OMU Faculty of Fine Arts Art Gallery until January 2.

Rector Aydın: "As a university, we will continue to support such innovative projects."

Speaking at the opening of the exhibition, OMU Rector Prof. Dr. Fatma Aydın highlighted how the special exhibition not only preserves cultural heritage but also draws attention to the region's economic potential. Aydın emphasized that the university will continue to support innovative projects, stating, "This exhibition, which brings together traditional hemp weaving and contemporary art, carries significant cultural heritage into the present while showcasing its economic potential."

The Intersection of Hemp and Art

Providing insight into the exhibition, Hasret Yavuz explained:

“This exhibition presents an artistic interpretation by combining the traditional hemp weaving and motifs of the Samsun region with painting art. Traditional products and motifs woven from hemp have been processed onto canvases using mixed techniques.” Yavuz also noted that OMU has hosted numerous scientific studies on hemp.

Yavuz stated that the exhibition consists of two sections. The first section features the production stages of hemp and traditional hemp weavings processed using assemblage techniques, while the second section showcases original works that do not include hemp weaving products.

The exhibition opening was attended by OMU Hemp Research Institute Director Prof. Dr. Selim Aytaç, OMU Faculty of Fine Arts faculty member Prof. Dr. Ali Seylan, OMU BAPKOB Coordinator Prof. Dr. Orhan Dengiz, OMU Ladik Vocational School Director Prof. Dr. Ünal Kılıç, project advisor Assoc. Prof. Dr. Engin Güney, Lecturer Coşkun Yanar, as well as academics and students.

Additionally, the "Hemp Weaving Program" launched at OMU Ladik Vocational School allows for the processing of local hemp while blending traditional production methods with modern technologies. These workshops produce souvenirs adorned with motifs unique to Samsun, contributing significantly to the preservation of cultural heritage.
