OMU is at the Field against the Coronavirus Disease with its Experience and Expert Teams

Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) has been carrying out exemplary tasks in the fight against the coronavirus disease (COVID- 19).

Since the confirmation of first case in Turkey on 11 March, OMU Medical Faculty Hospital has been serving as a specialized hospital against the pandemic whereas Samsun Teknopark has been producing face masks and videolaryngoscope devices for the use of health professionals.

According to the information given by OMU Health Research and Application Centre (Medical Faculty Hospital), OMU Medical Faculty Hospital is now serving as a specialized hospital against the pandemic.

The biggest hospital in the Black Sea Region with over 3000 staff members, OMU Medical Faculty Hospital, under the coordination of Samsun Provincial Directorate of Health, has continued to deliver outstanding health care services to people during the pandemic with the selfless efforts of its doctors from all branches, nurses, and all other allied health personnel.

Actions as part of the fight against the pandemic

In addition to the routine health care services, OMU Faculty of Medicine Hospital has created an organizational structure in which critical patients and cancer related treatments are given priority. Diagnosis and treatment units in where patients showing the symptoms of the virus or patients diagnosed with the disease are followed and treated have been established.

Respiratory Tract Infections Policlinic Unit is Operational

A Respiratory Tract Infections Policlinic Unit which will 7/24 address patients with coronavirus disease symptoms has been established within the OMU Faculty of Medicine Hospital. Additionally, a separate sampling room that will only serve potential coronavirus disease patients has been opened and a 128-slice cAT scanner is allocated to the unit that is specifically equipped for this task.

7 COVID- 19 treatment wards with 150 bed capacity have been prepared

During this period; seven COVID- 19 treatment wards have been prepared which have a total 150 bed capacity. 3 of these wards are currently operational and 4 of them are kept in reserve, ready to be used at any moment. Additionally, 24 critical care beds (16 for adults and 8 for children) have been reserved for coronavirus disease patients. The 20-bed surgical intensive care unit is also included in the contingency plans and is ready to be used should the need arise.

Supervisions and precautions have been increased, necessary equipment is provided

Triage teams have been formed and they are posted at the entrance gates of the OMU Hospital. These teams are taking the temperatures of every single individual who is entering the hospital, and those who are suspected of being infected are directed to the COVID- 19 policlinics. Additionally, face masks are distributed and its not allowed to walk inside the hospital without one.

COVID- 19 units and all the members of other diagnosis and treatment departments have been provided with the required equipment in accordance with the Ministry of Health’s COVID- 19 guidelines. The COVID- 19 specific medications needed by the patients have been supplied free of charge by the Ministry of Health.

University’s Guesthouse and Guesthouse for Patient Relatives is accommodating health care professionals would like to refrain from going back to their homes, and all the expenses of these facilities are covered by the Hospital.

Samsun Teknopark contributed to the fight against the pandemic with the manufacturing of face shields and videolaryngoscope devices.
