Prof. Dr. Okan Özgönenel, a valued member of the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Ondokuz Mayıs University’s (OMU) Faculty of Engineering, who lost his life due to an illness he had been struggling with for a long time, was bid farewell to with a funeral ceremony held in front of the faculty where he worked. Rector Prof. Dr. Fatma Aydın, Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Çetin Kurnaz, faculty deans, Prof. Dr. Okan Özgönenel's family, colleagues, academicians and students attended the ceremony.
Speaking at the ceremony, Rector Prof. Dr. Fatma Aydın emphasized Prof. Dr. Özgönenel’s profound impact on OMU and the country through his scientific work. "With his knowledge, experience, and invaluable contributions, he guided students and colleagues alike, becoming a respected pillar of our academic life. The large crowd gathered here shows how loved and respected he was. May he rest in peace, and may his family, friends, and our university community find comfort," she said.
In an emotional tribute, Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Çetin Kurnaz reflected, “I, along with many other academics, grew under his guidance and reached this point with his support. May his soul rest in paradise.”
Longtime friend and colleague Prof. Dr. Caner Aküner from Marmara University shared heartfelt words: "Okan was my deskmate from primary school through high school. We laughed together, dreamed together, and grew up together. It’s incredibly hard to accept his departure. May his soul rest in peace; he will always live in our hearts," extending condolences to Özgönenel’s family and colleagues.
Following the tributes, Prof. Dr. Mustafa Kara from the Faculty of Theology stated, "Being able to maintain a warm smile regardless of circumstances is one of the beauties of Islam. Our teacher always carried that kindness, and we will remember him this way." Prof. Dr. Kara then asked the attendees to offer their blessings to the late professor.
After the ceremony at the Faculty of Engineering, Prof. Dr. Özgönenel’s body was taken to the University Mosque for funeral prayers following the afternoon prayer and was then laid to rest at Kıran Köy Cemetery.
